Dana Condrea - 1961-2023

We are very sad to announce the death of Dana, in Romania.

She had been diagnosed with cancer only a few months ago, and was working part-time from home, whilst receiving treatment.

Suddenly, on 12th May she was taken into Intensive Care, and died the same night.

Without Dana, there would have been no Ukraine Chain. It was her language skills, energy and organising ability, and her formidable set of contacts that made it possible for us to identify the refugee community at Ciudei, and to foster the relationship.

To her belongs the lion’s share of the credit for what has been achieved.

From 1990 until 2000 Dana worked for the Ungureni Orphanage Trust in NE Romania, and more recently for Blizzard, which sponsored people from poor rural communities. She progressed from being an interpreter to Country Director.

Her abilities defied categorization; she had been trained as an electrical engineer (at which she was not very good), but as an organiser who could make anything happen and find her way through the most fiendish administrative systems, she excelled.

She could get you up to the head of any queue; she was always there when needed, always on the ball, endlessly hospitable to visitors, and a reliably cheerful companion.

Rest in peace, Dana.
